The Institute of Virology at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin employs approximately 100 people, is divided into 9 independent research groups, and houses the National Reference Center for Coronaviruses as well as the Consulting Laboratory for Hantaviruses. The Junior Research Group 'Systematic Structural Biology of Virus Infection,' led by Dr. Boris Bogdanow, focuses on elucidating virus-host protein-protein interactions in infected cells using modern high-throughput methods of structural and quantitative proteomics.

We are offering a PhD position as part of a DFG-funded research project in cooperation with the Leibniz Institute for Molecular Pharmacology (FMP). The position involves a technologically-oriented experimental project on virus-host interactions in the context of Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 (HSV-1) infection.

Overview of the position

Develop and establish methodologies for UV-based structural proteomics using HSV-1 infection in cell culture as a model

Analyze, interpret, and present your data and contribute to software solutions for data analysis

You will actively participate in national and international collaborative projects in herpes virology

Based on your data, you will develop biological hypotheses and test them experimentally.

You will be engaged in scientific research, and according to § 110 (4) Sentence 3 of the Berlin Higher Education Act (BerlHG), you will be provided with adequate time for your own scientific qualification (PhD thesis)

What we are looking for

A degree in Biotechnology, Life Sciences, or a comparable field, with initial experience (preferably during a Masters thesis) in infection biology, structural biology, or proteomics

A team-oriented, open-minded approach and readiness for intensive collaboration with partners across Berlin

Interest in combining dry-lab and wet-lab work, method optimization, and application to sophisticated cell culture systems

An understanding of quantitative analysis and statistics

Information regarding the position

Paygrade 13 according to TVöD VKA-K. Your job grade depends on your job qualification whereas the experience level depends on the number of working years. The yearly gross salary is hereby provided based on a full time position excluding yearly bonus and additional pay. You may find further information here

Working hours is part-time with 25 hours per week

The position is limited until 30.06.2029, as it is tied to the project duration
