Working at Charité

We are a small, international and dynamic research group at the German Heart Center of Charité. Our mission is to develop a novel heart valve prosthesis made from autologous tissue for both pediatric and adult patients.

Our long-term goal is to provide patients with congenital heart valve defects worldwide with a lifelong solution—eliminating the need for repeated valve replacement surgeries and lifelong medication.

To achieve this, we are currently conducting both clinical and preclinical research projects. We are seeking a dedicated veterinarian to actively support our team.

Overview of the position

- Responsibilities include the planning, organization, and execution of preclinical study protocols in large animal models (sheep/pig)

- You are responsible for the preparation and submission of animal study applications and amendments, as well as communication with regulatory authorities, funding bodies, and research facilities

- The role includes, among other tasks, training of experimental animals in accordance with refinement principles

- Care and monitoring of animals before, during, and after procedures

- Administration of anesthesia and analgesia during interventions

- Independent administration of treatments and follow-up examinations

- Performance of euthanasia and conduct of necropsies

- Procurement and management of pharmaceuticals

- Analysis, documentation, and summarization of experimental results

- Commitment is expected in contributing to scientific publications (opportunity to pursue a doctoral thesis is supported and feasible)

What we are looking for

- A completed degree in veterinary medicine

Solid knowledge in laboratory animal science is required (e.g., FELASA B certification or higher)

- Ideally, prior experience in animal experimentation

- Proficiency in handling large animals (especially sheep/pigs) is an advantage

- Willingness to travel within Germany for study-related activities is expected

- A structured, independent, and responsible working style is required

- High level of initiative, commitment, resilience, and organizational skills

- Fluency in both German and English, written and spoken
