Working at Charité
The research group is part of the interdisciplinary Collaborative Research Centre 1340 at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin and conducts research at the interface of medicine, preclinical research, physics, and computer science. Its focus is the development of innovative ultrasound- and MRI-based elastography techniques for the quantitative investigation of tissue mechanics. The project aims to develop a multiscale elastography approach for determining the shear modulus of biological tissues, ranging from the submillimetre scale through mouse models to the clinical scale of whole organs, in order to characterise biophysical changes in the extracellular matrix (ECM). Using generic phantoms composed of ECM components as well as biological samples, microscopic ECM changes over the course of pathological processes are to be resolved by means of multiscale ultrasound and MR elastography and viscoelastic modelling, thereby establishing a methodology for biophysically grounded, ECM-targeted imaging. In close collaboration with clinical and scientific partners within the Collaborative Research Centre, we combine methodological development, experimental ultrasound and MRI systems, and biophysical modelling into a translational research approach.
Overview of the position
Development of new ultrasound- and MRI-based elastography techniques for the quantitative investigation of tissue mechanics
Development and optimisation of algorithms for image reconstruction and data analysis
Setup and further development of experimental ultrasound and vibration systems for elastography
Conduct, evaluation, and interpretation of preclinical and clinical imaging studies
Close collaboration with clinical and scientific partners within the Collaborative Research Centre
Presentation and publication of scientific results at international conferences and in peer-reviewed journals
You will be employed as a Research Associate: Under Section 110 (4), sentence 3, the Berlin Higher Education Act (BerlHG) provides research associates with an appropriate portion of their working time for their own further scientific qualification.
What we are looking for
Degree in physics, biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, medical engineering, or a related science or engineering discipline
Interest in medical imaging, ultrasound, MRI, signal processing, and/or machine learning
Interest in translational research at the interface of engineering, physics, and medicine
Knowledge of scientific programming (e.g. Python, MATLAB, or C++)
Experience in image processing, signal processing, or machine learning
Ideally, hands-on experience with ultrasound, MRI, or other imaging modalities
Experimental experience with measurement setups, data acquisition systems, electronics, or hardware development is desirable
Good written and spoken English
Independent and structured way of working, as well as enthusiasm for interdisciplinary collaboration
Charité offers you
Highly professional work environment in motivated and interdisciplinary teams
A future-oriented, varied and demanding position with a high grade of personal responsibility and personal decision
